An investigation is underway after a shooting in East Los Angeles on Friday that left one teenager dead and another injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m. in the 900 block of Fraser Avenue (map), where deputies responded after receiving a call of a gunshot victim, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. When the deputies arrived, they discovered two male juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to hospitals, where one victim pronounced dead, according to the statement. The other one was in stable condition. A third person was uninjured.

The incident began when an SUV pulled up to the outside of a residence where the two victims and another male, who were described as 16 to 18 years old, were standing.

The shooter exited the passenger side of the vehicle and approached the young men, then opened fire, the Sheriff’s Department said. The shooter fled in the SUV, which sped away westbound through an adjacent alley.

Surveillance video appeared to show bystanders and the victims running for cover in the immediate aftermath of the gunfire.

Preliminary information indicated the incident may be gang-related, investigators said.
