Glendale’s official City bird, the peacock – with its iridescent tail incorporating the City’s logo – proudly leads the way on Glendale’s 2016 Tournament of Roses entry, “Getting There is Half the Fun.” Every journey can be an adventure and this year’s float invites you to discover some of Glendale’s great travel adventures, both historic and present day. High overhead we can spot an airplane reminiscent of the Ford Tri-motor flown by Ameila Earhart in 1929 from Columbus, Ohio to Glendale’s Grand Central Air Terminal to inaugurate transcontinental air service in this country. Glendale’s Grand Central Terminal was home to many of our nation’s most adventurous aviation pioneers including Charles Lindberg, Howard Hughes, and Wiley Post. Beneath the plane we see a historic steam locomotive highballing it out of Glendale on its way north to travel adventures along the Pacific Coast and beyond. Beneath the train, within the arches of the bridge, we see a number of famous Glendale landmarks including the Alex Theatre and the Brand Library. Next to the train we have a classic 1950s convertible, reminding us that Glendale is home to Cruise Night, the City’s immensely popular classic car show which this year will celebrate 23 years of cool cars, rock n’roll, and the adventure of the open road. We also have cyclists out for a ride, pointing out that Glendale is working hard to make the city a great place to walk and ride a bike, both on the street and in its 5000+ acres of natural open space. All this is set against the backdrop of Glendale’s original Southern Pacific Railroad Depot which was built in 1923 in the classic Mission Revival style. Today known as the Glendale Transportation Center, this architectural treasure serves both Amtrak and Metrolink and is one of the busiest stations in Southern California. All in all, Glendale’s 2016 entry serves to remind us that the travel can be an adventure. The important thing to remember is that whatever the destination, getting there is half the fun.
