An investigation was underway Saturday into the death of a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Pacoima, authorities said.
The train hit the pedestrian around 3 a.m. near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Van Nuys Boulevard (map), according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
On Jan. 15, the LAPD announced it was increasing traffic enforcement at railroad crossings around the city after a series of deadly collisions.
Last year in Los Angeles, eight people were killed in crashes involving trains, the Police Department said in a press release.
Some of the collisions occurred because pedestrians and motorists were not obeying rail traffic laws, the LAPD said.
In one incident, a pedestrian was fatally struck at a rail crossing while talking on a mobile phone.
Police said the woman was deeply engrossed in a conversation and did not notice the flashing lights that warned of an oncoming train.
