A Kansas man received two years of probation and a suspended one-year jail sentence Thursday after a 2-year-old boy he was caring for ended up with a small octopus in his throat earlier this year, the Associated Press reported.

Matthew Gallagher, 37, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of child endangerment, battery and interference with law enforcement in connection with the April 5 incident, according to AP.

Gallagher was initially charged with a felony count of aggravated child endangerment, AP reported.

He was arrested after doctor’s removed a small octopus from the boy’s throat, Wichita station KAKE reported at the time.

The toddler, who also sustained multiple facial injuries, was initially in critical condition.

His mother had returned home from work when she found Gallagher performing CPR on her son.

The little boy was rushed to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

The octopus appeared to have been intended for sushi, police in Wichita told television station KSNW back when the incident took place.

Gallagher admitted to feeding the little boy the octopus, which measured more than 2 inches long, according to AP.
