Multiple shots erupted in Ferguson late Sunday night, sending people running for cover, as crowds marked the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer.

The shot rang out as Ferguson’s acting police chief, Andre Anderson, was speaking to reporters.

Several objects were thrown at police and some businesses damaged, the St. Louis County Police Department said.

Brown’s killing by officer Darren Wilson sparked outrage and protests nationwide against what some described as racial bias by the police.

Hours before the gunfire, residents marked the first anniversary of the killing with peaceful marches and a moment of silence.
