Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver after a woman was struck and killed in Stanton Wednesday night.

The female pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck at around 10:20 p.m. at Cerritos and Dale Avenue, and the driver left her in the roadway.

A witness at the scene, Jeffrey Wheeler, said he was driving down Dale Avenue when “suddenly a lady starts running across the crosswalk.” He then sees the car in front of him strike the woman.

“I was right behind them and suddenly a lady starts running across the crosswalk at Cerritos and Dale and they hit her and she fell over next to the curb over there,” said Wheeler.

Wheeler said the truck had a green light, and he did not believe the woman had the right of way, but regardless, the car in front of him sped off without stopping.

When officers arrived at the scene, the woman was pronounced dead.

“At this time, it’s unconfirmed what the make model and color of the pickup truck was,” said the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. “There should and could be front right damage to the vehicle, based on some statements that were made at the scene.”

The victim’s identity has not been released as the case remains under investigation.
