A young woman was found dead in Santa Ana on Friday morning, and the victim’s husband has been taken into custody after a pursuit ended in a crash hours later, police said.

Fernando Jaramillo Llamas, 25, was arrested following the death of his wife, Maria Teresa Murillo Rojas, 26, according to the Santa Ana Police Department. He led officers on a chase in Orange County just before being apprehended, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The couple shared a home with their 1-year-old daughter and Rojas’ extended family, authorities said.

Homicide detectives began investigation after family members discovered the woman’s body at her apartment in the 1000 block of South Standard Avenue around 7 a.m., according to police.

Investigators believe Llamas left the location prior to the discovery of his wife’s body. He was out on bail for an ongoing criminal proceeding, police said.

It was not immediately known how she died but authorities believe she was the victim of a homicide since evidence at the scene suggested foul play, according to police.

Investigators don’t know how long she had been dead before relatives found her body.

“At this point, we don’t know if it occurred overnight or this morning,” Bertagna said. “What reason they were here, contacted her, I don’t know if it was because they hadn’t heard from her. Those are all things they’re finding out now as they interview the family members that found her.”

Police were trying to question Llamas when he apparently fled, leading officers on a chase, the corporal said. The pursuit ended in a crash and Llamas — then considered a person of interest — was arrested after a foot pursuit. He was later described as a suspect.
