A 25-year-old Hawthorne woman was convicted Tuesday of beating a man to death during a dispute at a Blue Line Metro station in Willowbrook last year.
Jurors found Tracy Joy Gomez guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of 65-year-old John Whitmore, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
On the afternoon of June 13, 2014, Gomez got into an argument with Whitmore on the Metro Blue Line platform, the release stated.
The argument escalated into a physical altercation that left Whitmore fatally injured.
Surveillance video showed Gomez and a second woman arrested in the beating fleeing the scene and disappearing into a crowd of disembarking passengers, investigators said.
Whitmore, described as a local artist, died from head injuries at St. Francis Hospital a week later.
Gomez allegedly used brass knuckles during the assault, according to the criminal complaint, which stated she had a 2009 conviction for second-degree robbery.
She faces up to 22 years in state prison when she is sentenced on Oct. 6.
