The flames ignited at around 1:30 a.m. north of Sunset Boulevard west of the 405 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire spread rapidly, burning more than 600 acres and destroying at least eight homes, according to authorities. It triggered mandatory evacuations and a partial closure of the 405.

Schools serving preschoolers to high schoolers in the area declared closures early Monday.

UCLA in Westwood announced canceling classes at 9:15 a.m.

“While the fire remains west of the 405 and poses no immediate threat to campus, we know members of our campus community live in evacuation areas or may be impacted by road closures,” the university said in a statement. “Employees should report to work if they can get to work safely.”

At around the same time, Santa Monica College officials said they’re closing the campus as they braced for dangerous wind conditions and worsening air quality.
