Video captured a close encounter between a kayaker who was fishing and a hammerhead shark over the weekend off Dana Point.
Bill Morales, who provided the video to KTLA on Thursday, said he was fishing about a half-mile off the coast on Sunday when a hammerhead shark attempted to snatch some fish from the side of his kayak and began “acting aggressively.”
They were attached to a kayak by a bungee cord, he explained.
Video of the incident appeared to show the shark had latched itself onto the cord, and was trailing several feet behind the kayaker.
“It’s big,” the unidentified man who shot the video from a separate kayak can be heard saying in the footage.
Morales described the shark as “attacking” the side of the kayak. He said it eventually took the fish from the side of the small boat.
Neither kayaker was injured.
Morales said the recent encounter with a hammerhead shark was his fourth in the past few weeks. He added he believed it was the same shark.
Separate video Morales sent of an earlier incident showed a hammerhead shark circling around a kayak for nearly 40 seconds before swimming away.
