Because a pipe that dumps Los Angeles’ treated wastewater into Santa Monica Bay from the Hyperion treatment plant must be repaired, that effluent will go into the ocean only 1 mile from shore instead of 5 miles from the beach, according to environmental advocacy group Heal the Bay. County sanitation officials say they will be able to disinfect the water to protect public health and the environment.
