San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies are investigating an attempted murder after a deputy and a suspect were injured when authorities responded for a report of a man making violent threats at a Victorville gym.
Around 11:20 a.m., deputies from the Victorville station responded to the In-Shape Family Fitness gym located on the 14600 block of Valley Center Drive for a report of a “terrorist threat.”
A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department said the suspect was making threats inside the gym prior to law enforcement’s arrival. He then exited the gym, at which point a “lethal force encounter” took place.
Officials had previously confirmed that at least one deputy opened fire at the scene, but it’s unclear what lead up to shots being fired.
Both the suspect and one deputy were wounded during the altercation and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Video from a witness at the scene appeared to show the deputy being airlifted from the scene. The Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the deputy suffered injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
Officials would not confirm how the deputy was injured, but some witnesses told KTLA that the suspect may have stabbed him.
The condition of the suspect, who is believed to have been shot, is still unclear.
When asked why the phrase “terrorist threats” was used to describe the incident, Sheriff’s Department officials said the term is used broadly.
“I don’t have any information that says this was some kind of a large-scale terrorist threat,” said Mara Rodriguez, spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. “We think of big incidents, especially right now with the things going on in the Middle East, but there’s no information that is anything like, but that term terrorist threats covers a whole lot of things.”
Multiple evidence markers were placed along the ground outside the gym, and a bullet hole was visible in the side of the gym building.
Despite the chaotic scene, no other injuries were reported.
Video from Sky5 showed crime scene tape blocking off the entrance to the gym and law enforcement vehicles blocking the entrance to the gym’s parking lot.
Investigators were expected to remain on scene for several hours.
