A Modoc County sheriff’s deputy who answered a disturbance call was killed and a suspect is in custody, authorities said.

The deputy responded to a report of a civil disturbance and assault about 10:30 a.m. in a rural area 10 miles south of Alturas, California, according to a Sheriff’s Office statement.

As deputies were responding, the shooting occurred.

At 11:05 a.m., sheriff’s officials said the shooter was taken into custody.
