A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody after allegedly pointing a gun at a deputy in East L.A. Saturday night, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The arrest came after a search that began around 8:49 p.m. in the 1000 block of South Ditman Avenue (map), a news release from the department stated.
Deputies from the department’s Operation Safe Streets Bureau were initially working an East Los Angeles Gang Suppression Unit and responded to the area after receiving an assault with a deadly weapon call, according to the release.
They located a vehicle matching the description from the report and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, when one person got out of the vehicle and began running eastbound on Dennison Street.
At some point, the boy allegedly pointed the weapon at deputies, at which point they opened fire, according to the release.
The unidentified teen then fled the scene.
He was later taken into custody after authorities found hiding in the backyard of a residence on the 1000 block of South Townsend Avenue, the release stated. It was not immediately clear how the long the search had lasted.
The teen had sustained a graze wound to the upper torso, prompting medical attention at the scene, according to the release.
He was booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
Detectives from the department’s internal affairs bureau were investigating the shooting.
