A man is dead after he was shot by a security guard at a Home Depot in the Florence-Firestone area of South Los Angeles on Sunday.

The man, identified by the Los Angeles Times as 30-year-old Carlos Lara Jr., was involved in an altercation outside the store at about 1:20 p.m., according to Officer Miller of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The security guard tried to detain Lara before he tried to escape, then fired multiple rounds, Miller said.

The Times said Lara was trying to drive away from the store in the 1800 block of Slauson Avenue when the security guard opened fire, striking him at least once. Lara was declared dead at the scene.

Officer Lopez said the security guard is a man in his 40s and confirmed that the alleged assault involved a third party, not the security guard.

The guard was detained and questioned, but not arrested or charged with a crime.

The person who Lara allegedly assaulted was hospitalized for their injuries, the Times reports.
