Firefighters responding to a house fire in San Bernardino late Wednesday ended up discovering hundreds of marijuana plants growing inside the home, authorities said.
Crews responded to a report of a home on fire in the 100 block of Newport Avenue (map) at about 9:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Frank Macomber with the San Bernardino Police Department and Battalion Chief Nathan Cook with the San Bernardino City Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the attack.
Crews gained access through the roof of the home and were able to put out the fire, according to Cook.
As they extinguished the flames, firefighters noticed that the entire home and garage were filled with marijuana plants, up to 500 in total, Cook added.
Arson investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
It was not immediately clear if any arrests had been made, Macomber said.
KTLA’s Justin Burton and Crystal Garcia contributed to this report.
