A suspect in a murder that occurred in Apple Valley in late January is in critical condition after authorities say he shot himself.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says 51-year-old Clint Griffith is the lone suspect in a shooting that claimed the life of 40-year-old Sommer Kelly and left her 18-year-old daughter injured.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. on Jan. 30 in the 20600 block of Waalew Road in Apple Valley. Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was transported to the hospital where she was in stable condition.

When authorities arrived at the scene, the suspect had already fled. Officials with SBSD said the investigation began to focus on Griffith.

On Feb. 4, SBSD received a call about a carjacking in Barstow where Griffith was named as the primary suspect.

Authorities said the 51-year-old sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head during that incident and is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at 909-890-4904.
