Riverside Police Department officers shot and killed a man they say was confronting them with a knife on Thursday.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was reported for alleged domestic violence at about 5:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of Chestnut Street, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

After the man in his 50s confronted officers, police attempted to use a less-lethal option at first, Officer Ryan Railsback told the media outlet.

The number of officers who opened fire is not yet known, though The Press-Enterprise said multiple shots could be heard.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the “domestic violence victim, also in her 50s, suffered a serious injury caused by the suspect and was hospitalized, Railsback said,” as reported by The Press-Enterprise.

The nature of her injury has not been disclosed, but she was not stabbed, Railsback said.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
