A police pursuit ended in a crash and the fatal shooting of a stolen car suspect on the 215 Freeway in San Bernardino Friday afternoon.
The pursuit began around 2 p.m. after officers tried to pull over an SUV near Belvan Avenue and Baseline Road that had been reported stolen by the owner, according Lt. Richard Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.
When the driver refused to stop, a pursuit ensued.
The chase ended just minutes later on the northbound 215 Freeway at University Parkway when the driver rammed several other vehicles, according to Lawhead.
When the driver attempted to ram a police car head-on an officer opened fire, killing the suspect at the scene, Lawhead said.
A SigAlert was called at 2:18 p.m. for the northbound 215 Freeway at University Parkway (map) due to police activity, according to the traffic log of the California Highway Patrol.
As of 9:45 p.m. the closure remained in effect.
Aerial video showed six police vehicles on scene, and a white SUV-type vehicle appeared to have crashed head-on into one.
A yellow tarp appeared to cover a body next to the SUV.
