A preliminary-magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck about 10 miles north-northwest of Palm Springs (map) on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The quake, which occurred at 8:53 a.m., was measured at a depth of 10 miles, the Geological Survey said. Its epicenter was located 6 miles northwest of Garnet, in Riverside County, and 14 miles east of Banning.
Residents reported feeling the temblor in Banning, Hemet and Lake Elsinore.
Christenne Moon, who was in Indian Wells at the time of the earthquake, described it as “a sharp jolt.”
