Authorities are searching for a man who got away following what police initially believed to be a barricade situation at a shopping plaza in Inglewood only to learn hours later that the suspect had already fled the area Tuesday evening.

Officers stopped a vehicle around 4:30 p.m. near South Figueroa Street and Manchester Avenue in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of South Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

It’s unclear what prompted the traffic stop, but LAPD later said that the driver refused to comply with the officers’ commands.

The driver then allegedly attempted to run over the officers, and an “officer-involved” shooting took place before the suspect fled in his vehicle, authorities said. Police later confirmed that no officers had been injured and that they did not believe the suspect was struck by gunfire.

Police initially said a brief pursuit had occurred but later confirmed that an LAPD helicopter had located the suspect’s vehicle roughly 5 miles away at the parking lot of a shopping center near Crenshaw Boulevard and West imperial Highway in Inglewood.

But by the time officers arrived at the location, the suspect had already left his vehicle and ran into one of the stores, authorities said.

Officials initially said the suspect had barricaded himself inside the store, and it wasn’t clear whether the man was armed or if any store employees or customers were inside the location.

LAPD later confirmed that there were no hostages. A preliminary investigation later found that the man had changed clothes inside the store and fled undetected before police arrived, officials said.
