An investigation was underway Saturday after a man was struck by a passenger train in North Hollywood, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

Authorities responded to a report of a deceased person near the railroad tracks in the area of 7100 Lankershim Blvd. at 9:07 a.m., LAFD said in a news release. The person was struck by an Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passenger train, which remained at the scene.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer John Stafford, of the Valley Traffic Division, told KTLA the train’s engineer saw something lying on the tracks and thought it was trash.

“Laying on the tracks and the train blew the horn and no movement at all. No movement. He had a blanket over him,” Stafford said. “The engineer stopped the train as soon as he realized it wasn’t trash.”

The passengers aboard the train were not injured, officials said.

No other information was released.
