Pacoima residents are asking for help in removing an RV encampment after they say their pleas to city leaders have gone unanswered.
In a statement, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, 7th District, said she “share[s] the concerns of residents regarding the health and safety hazards many RV encampments pose in our neighborhoods.”
Rodriguez touted her RV to Home effort “that has housed 125 people and disposed of over 83 RV’s from our neighborhoods” and said this particular encampment has been visited by LA Sanitation for cleaning more than 20 times.
“The encampment on Bradley is something I take very seriously and have been working on along with other City departments and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority,” she said. “We are working with the residents affected by this encampment and will continue to do so until the issue is resolved.”
The residents told the Pacoima Neighborhood Council last week that the encampment is creating problems for the area.
“We are living in increased litter on the streets [from the RVs] – toxic waste, such as urine [and] feces on the sidewalks,” Pacoima resident Teresa Paniagua told the council, as reported by the San Fernando Valley Sun. “They have also taken over part of the sidewalk, blocking it with wood for their privacy, and [some] keep aggressive animals carelessly and let them [roam] free on the sidewalk.
KTLA’s Ellina Abovian said she counted about two dozen RVs on Bradley Avenue near the Pacoima Wash.
Neighbors have set up a Change.org petition to draw attention to the encampment, and while several of them told the Sun they have sympathy for those living on the streets, public safety is at risk.
“I have compassion for people who are struggling,” Paniagua told the outlet. “Unfortunately, when it’s happening to you and you’re afraid for the safety of your family, something has to change.”
