Officers were at the scene Monday of a deadly crash in San Bernardino that was being investigated as the result of possible street racing, police said.

Two cars were seen traveling westbound on Ninth Street around 3:15 p.m. at a high rate of speed, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

“A car came flying by,” witness Vickie Turner said. “It looked like he was going at least 90 mph.”

One driver lost control, sheared off a light pole and a water main, police Lt. Rich Lawhead said.

The impact nearly cut the vehicle in half, video from the scene showed.

“As he hit the tree, the car just split in half, spun around and went up in the air,” Joe Turner said.

The car came to rest in the parking lot of E. Neal Roberts Elementary School, which is closed for spring break, Lawhead said.

The driver, who appeared to be male, died at the scene, according to Lawhead.

Witnesses gave conflicting reports on whether or not the crash was the result of street racing.

Investigators released a surveillance image of a second car seen at the time of the crash.

Police were waiting to look at additional surveillance video from the school to determine the involvement of the second car, Lawhead said.
