A Riverside police officer helped stop a woman from jumping off an overpass above the 215 Freeway in Menifee earlier this week, officials said Tuesday.

Officer Jennifer Brandt, a school resource officer, was driving in a marked patrol car in the area of Newport Road and the 215 Freeway (map) when she saw a woman who appeared to be trying to jump off the south side of the overpass above the the freeway, a news release from the Riverside Police Department stated.

The incident took place just after 4 p.m. Monday, shortly after Brandt finished her shift, the Press-Enterprise reported.

The woman was attempting to jump over a waist high guardrail and had her right leg over the wall as two bystanders tried to hold her back, the Police Department stated.

“The officer parked her car in the number two lane and got out and immediately ran to the three people and grabbed (the woman) from behind from both biceps,” Sgt. Marc Dehdashtian told the Press-Enterprise. “She told the female who was trying to jump to relax and told the other two to maintain their hold on her body as well.”

With the help of the bystanders, Officer Brandt managed to pull the young woman back over the rail and onto the ground.

The woman was detained pending a mental evaluation following the incident.
