An off-duty police officer who was fired upon by an unknown shooter in a passing vehicle in Eastvale on Tuesday returned fire and was not injured in the incident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Eastvale police were first called to the scene of a vehicle burglary in the 6500 block of Caxton Street around 4:50 a.m.
“The investigation revealed an off-duty LAPD officer’s vehicle was burglarized,” Deputy Michael Vasquez wrote in a news release. “While the officer was assessing the damage, an occupant from a vehicle driving by his location … began firing at him.”
The shooter drove away after the officer returned fire, and it is unclear whether the vehicle or the shooter inside was hit.
It is unclear what type of gun the shooter used, Deputy Mike Vazquez told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. It is also unclear whether the vehicle was the officer’s squad car or a personal vehicle.
No outside residents were injured during the incident.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s station at 951-955-2600.
