A fatal shooting that involved an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer and another man in Ontario is under investigation Friday.

The incident was reported around 8:30 p.m. Thursday near North Euclid Avenue and West 6th Street by several people who called 911.

Arriving police found two injured men at the scene with at least one suffering from a gunshot wound.

One of the men, identified only as an off-duty LAPD officer, was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and is expected to recover. It was unclear what type of injury the officer sustained in the incident.

The other man, identified as Hugo Cachua, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was unclear what motivated the altercation but some witnesses said it started with a minor fender bender that escalated into a violent confrontation but investigators have not confirmed that detail.

Cachua, a father of three young children, was unarmed at the time, according to his family.

Ontario Police Department Cpl. Eliseo Guerrero said investigators are talking to witnesses and reviewing video cameras.

Two cars, including a BMW and a Toyota, were seen being towed from the area Friday morning.

It was unclear what clues the vehicles may provide or if either of the men were inside their car at the time of the shooting.

No arrests have been made, Ontario police confirmed.

The LAPD said they are aware of the shooting and are “fully cooperating” with the investigation. The California Department of Justice will be investigating the deadly incident.
