A nearby “suspicious package” resulted in the evacuation of a Westminster voting center before a bomb squad deemed it safe Saturday evening.

Westminster police responded after an employee at the vote center called shortly before 4 p.m. and said they saw a person leaving a box in the parking lot area, adjacent to the Westminster Community Services Building, Sheriff’s Cmdr. Alan Iwashita said.

Everyone at the vote center and the ballots were evacuated as a bomb squad responded to assess the package, ultimately finding that it only contained miscellaneous items and nothing incendiary in any way, the commander said. It was deemed safe at 6:15 p.m.

The Orange County Registrar of Voters around 6:30 p.m. tweeted, “we have clearance that it is now safe and have reopened for voters.”

While the Westminster Community Services Building was temporarily closed during the investigation, the registrar told voters they can visit any of the county’s 167 other centers and pop-up sites.

The vote centers are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

“I am grateful that our Vote Center team members and voters are safe,” Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said in a statement. “My office is dedicated to providing election services for the citizens of Orange County to ensure equal access to the election process, protect the integrity of votes, and maintain a transparent, accurate and fair process.”
