A local restaurateur is turning a popular Los Angeles eatery into a relief center for laid off and struggling restaurant workers.

Beginning Thursday, co-owner Nancy Silverton says those in need can come to the Chi Spacca restaurant at 6610 Melrose Avenue in the Hancock Park neighborhood for food and supplies.

Three hundred packaged dinners will be given out every day between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on a first-come first-served basis, with a limit of two meals per person, Silverton said in an Instagram post.

Everyone will be asked to show proper identification and proof of recent employment at a restaurant.

“We will also have supplies on hand for those in need: diapers, wipes, baby food, non-perishable canned foods and cereals, toilet paper, and Tylenol,” the post states.

The amount of supplies each person can take will also be limited, but they will be free to those in need, Silverton said.

The plan is to keep the relief center open “throughout the quarantine period or until we can no longer financially support the program,” she said.

Silverton is the co-owner of three Los Angeles area restaurants, including Chi Spacca, Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza.

Long lines are expected for the food giveaway, but everyone was still asked to practice social distancing by standing 6-feet apart.
