The defense attorney for a man accused of killing his roommate, whose body was found in a remote Orange County canyon two weeks after she disappeared, argued Wednesday that there was no evidence conclusively linking his client to her death.

During closing arguments in the murder trial of Kwang Chol Joy, 55, attorney Adam Vining emphasized that there was no evidence about how 36-year-old Maribel Ramos died.

Though evidence showed Joy had done an Internet search for the location where Ramos’ body was found in Modjeska Canyon and for how long it takes a body to decompose, that could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Joy killed Ramos, Vining said.

Ramos, a former U.S. Army sergeant, was close to graduating from Cal State Fullerton when she disappeared in May 2013. Joy was charged with her killing hortly after her body was found.

After closing arguments, the case was handed to the jury Wednesday.
