Metro’s D Line extension project is one step closer to completion.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was joined by other city leaders and Metro officials on Monday at the future Wilshire/Fairfax station to celebrate the completion of tunneling for all three sections of the D Line extension, which will connect downtown Los Angeles with the Westside.
“[We are celebrating] another milestone in our efforts to build a world class transportation system and improve access throughout Los Angeles,” Mayor Bass said on Monday.
Bass also commended the construction workers who dug nine miles worth of parallel tunnels 70 feet underground through “some of the region’s most challenging geologic conditions” including tar sands and methane gas.
The D Line, also known as the Purple Line, currently ends at the Wilshire/Western station. The extension will add seven new stops and is being built in three stages, the first of which – from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega station – is slated to open in 2025.
Phase two will run from the Wilshire/La Cienega station to the future Century City/Constellation station and is set to open in 2026.
The final stage of the project will extend the line from Century City to its final stop at the future Westwood/VA Hospital station. It is scheduled to be completed in 2027, ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
