A man and woman were shot and killed in Long Beach on Saturday night, police said.

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. at 953 Park Circle, in the Willmore neighborhood near Drake Park, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

Police told KTLA the victims were standing on the sidewalk when someone opened fire. The victims, identified as 39-year-old Juan Guizar-Gutierrez and 44-year-old Maricela Honorato, were struck in the upper body, according to police.

Guizar-Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene by the Long Beach Fire Department.

Honorato was taken to a local hospital where she died, police reported.

A fight was reported in the area at the same time, but it is not yet known if the fight was connected to the shooting, police said.

The motive for the shooting was unknown and a search for the gunman is underway.

Homicide investigators responded to the scene to interview witnesses and conduct safety checks, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
