The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified the 19-year-old man who drowned in the lake at SoFi Stadum as Mirai Shepard of Chula Vista.

According to Inglewood police, security officers saw Shepard swimming in the lake around 9:30 p.m. on Friday; at the same time, an electronic dance music concert featuring DJ Illenium was taking place inside the stadium.

Shepard eventually went underwater and didn’t resurface, prompting a search and rescue operation that included a helicopter and drone.

His body was recovered from the lake, which is approximately 15 feet deep, just before 11 p.m., police said.

The medical examiner has determined Shepard’s death was an accident.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this devastating incident,” the police department said in a statement on Saturday.

SoFi Stadium opened in September 2020 and is home to the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers of the NFL.
