Authorities say a man shot by deputies following a pursuit in the unincorporated Lennox area of the South Bay had driven toward deputies at one point and was armed with a gun Friday morning.

The incident began when deputies stopped a Honda Accord around 1 a.m. in the 4800 block of 119th Place.

“The driver was incoherent as the deputies asked him several questions,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Rodney Moore said.

The man, said to be a resident of Lancaster in his mid-20s, then put the car in reverse and drove toward deputies, Moore said.

One of the deputies was struck and suffered minor injuries to a leg before the driver sped away, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The deputies pursued the driver, who soon hit an unoccupied vehicle that had been stopped by California Highway Patrol on Inglewood Avenue and 111th Street.

Nobody in that crash sustained any injuries, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The chase, which lasted about a minute, ended when the Honda driver slammed into a pole and fence near Lennox Boulevard and Firmona Avenue.

After contacting the man, who was armed with a gun, a shooting occurred with each deputy firing about three or four rounds at the suspect, Moore said.

The suspect was struck at least twice—once in the his left left and once in his lower torso—and was transported to a local hospital where he was last listed in stable condition, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Jose Melendez, who lives nearby, said he heard a gunshot when he returned home from work.

After hearing the shot, Melendez said he went outside and saw deputies still pointing their guns at a man who was down on the ground.

Investigators said a weapon was recovered at the scene.
