An investigation was underway Sunday following the death of a man who fell out of a so-called party bus while it was southbound on the 101 Freeway in Universal City, authorities said.

The 2001 Ford F550 was near the Lankershim Boulevard exit at 12:15 a.m. when the incident happened, according to the California Highway Patrol.

“For reasons yet to be determined, the passenger was ejected from the party limo bus and came to rest in the number three lane,” the CHP said in a news release.

The 24-year-old man was struck by several passing cars, according to the CHP.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the scene and the man, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m.

All lanes of the freeway were closed for about three hours.

“In central L.A., in the office that I’ve been at for six years, I’ve not heard of one incident in which a party bus was involved and a person ejected,” said Officer Chris Baldonado, spokesman for the CHP. “I’m sure this isn’t the first time it’s happened. In my typical area, that’s usually not the case.”

It was unclear who owned the limo or where it was headed.
