A man was killed after being struck by at least six vehicles on the 101 Freeway on Friday night, and preliminary investigation indicates that he was hit by “upwards of seven cars,” authorities said.

According to a CHP release, officers were dispatched to the northbound lanes of the 101 south of Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard around 9:15 p.m. on reports of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian.

The victim, who has only been identified as a Hispanic man, was attempting to cross all lanes of the freeway from the center divider to the east shoulder when a 19-year-old in a pickup truck hit him, CHP said.

“[The] 19-year-old driver was traveling northbound…in the #3 lane and struck the pedestrian which resulted in fatal injuries,” the CHP release stated. “After the crash multiple other vehicles struck the pedestrian…as of the investigation, upwards of seven vehicles may have struck the pedestrian.”

Multiple drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. All of the motorists – including the 19-year-old who initially struck the man – were determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, law enforcement officials confirmed.

It is not known if the victim was under the influence when he died or why he was on the freeway.
