Police in Gardena were investigating the death of a man found fatally shot in the parking lot of a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop on Friday afternoon.

Officers were first alerted to the shooting around 1:23 p.m. by a 911 call reporting shots fired in the area of  West 135th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, according to Lt. Vince Osorio with the Gardena Police Department.

When officers arrived, they discovered the body of an adult black man in the driver’s seat of a parked BMW, Osorio said.

“While seated in his vehicle, he was approached on foot by the shooter or shooters,” said Gardena police Lt. Russ Temple.

The victim was declared dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

No weapon was found at the scene, according to Osorio.

The man has not been identified.

Police were expected to be going over surveillance video of the parking lot in hopes of finding additional information.
