A man committed suicide Saturday after allegedly shooting his wife to death at a residence in Jurupa Valley, authorities said.

Avram and Simona Mateas had been going through divorce proceedings, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Officers from the Jurupa Valley Police Department responded at 8:36 a.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 3400 block of Skylane Drive (map), the release said. When the officers arrived, they found 43-year-old Simona Mateas lying in the driveway of the residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. They administered medical aid to her until medical personnel arrived.

A second victim was also located at the home. Both were transported to a hospital, where Simona Mateas succumbed to her injuries, the Sheriff’s Department said. The condition of the other victim was not immediately known.

Several hours after the shooting, the San Bernardino Police Department received a call reporting a suicide in that city, according to authorities. The deceased person was later identified as Avram Mateas.

No other information was immediately available.

An investigation into both incidents is underway.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Paz of the Sheriff’s Department’s central homicide unit at 951-955-2777, or Investigator Johnson of the Jurupa Valley station at 951-955-2600.
