Prosecutors on Tuesday announced formal charges against a man accused of sexually assaulting and trying to kill an 80-year-old woman last month in her Hollywood apartment.
Marcus Datwione Peete, 33, was charged with one count each of attempted murder, assault, sexual penetration by a foreign object, and first-degree burglary with a person present, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
The incident happened June 18 in the 1700 block of Ivar Avenue, where the assailant was captured on two surveillance video cameras in the apartment building, according to a Los Angeles Police Department news release.
He took the elevator to the upper floors of the building and knocked on the victim’s door, police said, adding that he had buzzed at the front door of the secure building until someone let him in around 4 a.m.,
Peete allegedly forced his way into the victim’s home after she answered the front door, the news release said.
“Pete is accused of sexually assaulting the woman as she fought back,” the statement continued. “He again punched the victim several times and fled on foot.”
At a June 22 news conference, LAPD Capt. William Hayes described the woman was “very fiesty.”
“She was able to defend herself enough that it could hurt him, and he chose to leave,” the captain said.
The victim was able to get help from a neighbor, who called police. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, authorities said.
The assault appeared to be “on its face, random,” and the woman said she did not know her attacker, according to Hayes.
Peete was arrested the following day in the area of Crenshaw and Olympic boulevards in the Mid-Wilshire area, according to the news release. If convicted as charged, he faces life in prison.
The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and prosecuted by the DA’s office’s Elder Abuse Section.
