A pair of recent killings have Long Beach residents and business owners on edge, and on Thursday, Long Beach Police Department officers and city officials met with the public to discuss ways to curb the violence.

The most recent incident, a fatal stabbing at a Dave’s Hot Chicken restaurant, came about two weeks after a 32-year-old man was fatally shot. In both cases, altercations preceded the deadly violence.

About 150 or 200 people attended Thursday’s meeting in a coffee shop parking lot to discuss next steps for the city, according to KTLA 5’s Kareen Wynter.

“I am not going to tolerate people coming into our community, whether it be in our neighborhoods or in our businesses, and be OK with them committing crimes,” said Councilwoman Kristina Duggan.

Neighbors, however, say they don’t always feel safe.

Duggan plans to hold a town hall meeting in the next two or three weeks.
