Continued progress against the nearly 48-square-mile Lake Fire on Saturday prompted the full reopening of Highway 38 and the lifting of most evacuation orders in affected areas of the San  Bernardino National Forest, officials said.

A section of Highway 38, south of Big Bear, had been closed for more than a week as firefighters attempted to gain the upper hand on the massive wildfire.

Areas near the blaze remain closed to all recreational use, according to a Saturday update on InciWeb, a multiagency website.

Only Burns Canyon remained under mandatory evacuation orders, the website stated.

The Lake Fire, whose cause was under investigation, has left four injured and 30,526 acres burned since it began June 17, the U.S. Forest Service said in news release. The fire was 50 percent contained as of Saturday night, the agency said.

According to officials, the estimated cost of battling the fire has reached $21.9 million, with 2,098 firefighters and other personnel deployed to the scene.

They were supported by 155 engines; three air tankers, including two DC-10s; 18 helicopters; 19 water tenders and eight bulldozers.
