A 23-year-old man was taken into custody after being shot during an armed standoff with sheriff’s deputies in Lawndale on Wednesday.
The incident began at about 1 p.m. at a home near West 164th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard (map).
Aerial video from Sky5 showed what appeared to be bullets being fired through a screen door as it swung open at about 1:50 p.m.
The shots appeared to be coming from inside the home.
Shortly after the shots were fired, a man later identified as Travis Herr, could be seen reaching out of the home to close the door.
Herr used multiple firearms to shoot at deputies, vehicles and neighboring homes from his residence, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
At about 2:15 p.m., Herr emerged from the home carrying what appeared to be a rifle and walked into the back yard, video showed.
While he was headed back toward the door Herr suddenly dropped to the ground from a gunshot wound.
Several officers surrounded Herr and carried him from the yard to the street, where he was then transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Herr’s weapon and a pool of blood could be seen near the door of the home.
Deputies from South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station had previously received numerous calls for service at the home, according to the release.
The northbound and southbound Hawthorne Boulevard off-ramps on the 405 Freeway were shut down during the incident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
