An Irvine man who allegedly killed someone he thought was having an affair with his wife was scheduled to be arraigned in Santa Ana on Tuesday, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Hongli Sun, 38, has been charged with one felony count of special circumstances murder by lying in wait, and one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the killing of 54-year-old Xuan Liu, a news release from the DA’s office stated.

On the afternoon of July 18, Sun parked his Mercedes-Benz SUV in a lot on Barranca Parkway, then waited for Liu with the alleged intent to kill him, according to the release.

After observing Liu walking in the parking lot, Sun is accused of intentionally driving his SUV toward the victim and striking him. The suspect then allegedly approached the victim, took out a knife and stabbed Liu as he attempted to get up, prosecutors said.

Liu was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Irvine Police Department, Sun believed that Liu was having an affair with his wife.

Sun was being held without bail, according to prosecutors. His arraignment was scheduled to take place at Central Jail Court.
