A man fatally shot his wife before killing himself in their Chatsworth home while their children were also there, LAPD officials said Monday.

The incident was reported Sunday about 4:30 p.m. when police received calls about shots fired in the 9100 block of Foster Lane.

Responding officers found a man and woman dead in the upstairs bedroom, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release Monday.

An investigation revealed that the man shot his wife as she lay in bed before he turned the gun on himself.

Two young children were home at the time, but were not injured, according to police.

Olivia and James Robinson, who live across the street from the deceased couple, said they found the children inside the home after police performed a welfare check there. A security camera from the Robinsons’ home shows two officers knocking on the victims’ door Sunday morning.

“I begged him not to go back in there, but he went back in there because they wanted to find the baby,” Olivia said of her husband, John.

The Robinsons said it was immediately clear something was wrong when they found the older child, a girl around 4 years old, downstairs.

“She obviously was in bad condition because she reeked really bad of urine,” Olivia said. “And she had more of a blank stare on her face. She was very, very quiet.”

They then asked where her parents were, James said.

“I think she may have said they were sleeping, but she told me that they’re upstairs and they’re hurt,” he told KTLA. “Right there, we figured it’s just not good.”

The younger child — a boy who is about 3 months old — was also upstairs, the Robinsons said.

The neighbors said they heard the couple arguing last Wednesday night and fear their children were left to fend for themselves for four days.

Authorities took the children to a hospital for observation, and both were subsequently placed in the custody of the Department of Children’s Family Services, police said.

The man and woman killed have not been identified. The woman was only described as being 38 years old and Asian, while the man was described as being 46 and Persian.

No additional information about the pair or the circumstances behind the incident have been released.
