A week after a man was found dead in a Rancho Cucamonga park, detectives said Thursday the incident was being investigated as a homicide and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an unresponsive man in Kenyon Park (map) around 6:28 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Mark Anthony Riveral, 34, was later identified by the department as the man found dead.

He had suffered “trauma to his upper body,” likely between 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 and the following morning, sheriff’s Sgt. John Gaffney said at a Friday news conference.

The sergeant declined to describe the nature of the injuries, citing the ongoing investigation.

Riveral’s vehicle, a 2003 four-door white Toyota Camry, was located on a street near the park, investigators added.

It was not known why Riveral was at the park or if he planned to meet anyone, and no further information was provided.

“He did not deserve to leave from this world the way he did,” the victim’s father, Ed Riveral, said at the news conference. “Please help us seek and find justice for my son’s death.”

Investigators asked anyone who heard or saw anything that night, or had recent contact with Riveral, to come forward.
