A water main break in Highland Park early Thursday morning caused street closures that impacted local businesses, residents and vehicle traffic.

Officials responded to the break in the 5300 block of York Avenue (map) around 2 a.m., Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Gail Harris said.

A 6-inch cast-iron main was broken for unknown reasons and was later shut off.

About 26 businesses were located near the break, and would be affected for an unknown amount of time, Harris said around 6 a.m.

Alternative routes were Meridian Street instead of York Avenue and Avenue 52 or Avenue 54 instead of Avenue 53.

York Avenue reopened and service was restored, LADWP stated on Twitter about 1:15 p.m.
