Strong Santa Ana winds fanned a number of brush fires around Southern California in October and November 2019, including blazes that destroyed homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents.

Here’s a list of the incidents firefighters are battling or have managed to extinguish.

Maria Fire Near Santa Paula:

The Maria Fire was reported about 6:15 p.m. Oct. 31 atop South Mountain near Santa Paula.

  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: At least four destroyed
  • Cause: Under investigation

Hillside Fire in San Bernardino: 

The Hillside Fire was reported about 1:40 a.m. Oct. 31 along Highway 18 at Lower Waterman Canyon, in the northern end of the city.

  • Size: 200 acres
  • Containment: 95%
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: six homes destroyed; 18 damaged
  • Cause: Under investigation

46 Fire in Jurupa Valley:

The 46 Fire broke out about 12:40 a.m. Oct. 31 along the 5300 block of 46th Avenue. The flames spread to Riverside after jumping over the Santa Ana River.

  • Size: 328 acres
  • Containment: 100% on Nov. 3
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: At least three homes and two outbuildings
  • Cause: Possibly ignited by a car that caught fire during a pursuit

Easy Fire in Simi Valley:

The Easy Fire broke out about 6:10 a.m. Oct. 30 in the 200 block of Easy Street.

  • Size: 1,860 acres
  • Containment: 100% on Nov. 2
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: At least two structures destroyed
  • Cause: Under investigation

Getty Fire in Brentwood area:

The Getty Fire was reported about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 28 in the 1800 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard.

  • Size: 745 acres
  • Containment: 79%
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: 10 homes destroyed, 15 homes damaged
  • Cause: Likely a tree branch that fell on some power lines during high winds

Hill Fire in Jurupa Valley:

The Hill Fire erupted in the area of Granite Hill Drive and Pyrite Street around 10 a.m. Oct. 30.

  • Size: 628 acres
  • Containment: 100% on Nov. 2
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: one home destroyed, one home damaged
  • Cause: Under investigation

Tick Fire in the Santa Clarita area:

The Tick Fire broke out about 1:24 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the 31600 block of Tick Canyon Road in Agua Dulce and spread to Santa Clarita.

  • Size: 4,615 acres
  • Containment: 100% on Oct. 31
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: A total of 45 structures destroyed, including 40 homes, and 29 structures destroyed, including 23 homes
  • Cause: Under investigation

Saddleridge Fire in Sylmar:

The Saddleridge Fire broke out on Saddleridge Road along the 210 Freeway near Yarnell Street around 9 p.m. Oct. 10. The blaze burned dozens of structures and prompted the evacuations of thousands of residents in the San Fernando Valley.

  • Size: 8,799 acres
  • Containment: 97%
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Fatalities: 1
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: 88 structures damaged, 19 structures destroyed
  • Cause: Under investigation

Sandalwood Fire in Calimesa:

The Sandalwood Fire erupted in the area of Calimesa Boulevard and Sandalwood Drive just before 3:40 p.m. Oct. 10. It quickly tore through a mobile home park, destroying dozens of residences and killing two people.

  • Size: 1,011 Acres
  • Containment: 100% on Oct. 14
  • Evacuations: Lifted
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Structures Damaged/Destroyed: 74 structures destroyed, 16 structures damaged
  • Cause: The blaze was ignited by a trash truck that dumped a load of burning garbage, which spread to nearby vegetation
