Four people, including a suspected gunman, were arrested Monday morning after an attempted traffic stop led to a shootout on a street in Fullerton, officials said.
A veteran officer and his trainee about 2 a.m. tried to pull over a Chevy SUV, for traffic violations, near Euclid and Williamson avenues, according to a news release from the Fullerton Police Department.
A pursuit ensued after the female driver failed yield, the release said.
A male passenger exited the vehicle on Euclid, west of Williamson. Armed with a handgun, he began shooting at the officers as they pursued him on foot, police said.
The veteran officer returned fire at the shooter, according to the statement. A third officer then arrived at the scene. After being fired upon by the gunman, he too returned fire, authorities said.
Neither the officers nor the armed suspect were injured in the exchanges, officials said.
The gunman, later identified as 25-year-old Shane Stephenson, of Fullerton, fled into a nearby neighborhood, the news release said.
The driver and two male passengers were taken into custody. They were identified as Shealyn Edgmon, 22, of Orange; Brett Chavez, 27, of Santa Ana; and Matthew Fernandez, 29, of Fullerton, police said. Authorities initially gave different surnames for those three suspects.
A perimeter was set up in the area and a multiagency search was conducted.
Stephenson was in custody as of 6 a.m., police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel confirmed. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer and felony assault on a police officer with a firearm.
Stephenson “has an extensive criminal history and is on post-release community supervision,” the police statement said.
Although a holster was recovered at the scene, the search for the suspect’s weapon was ongoing, according to authorities.
