Grant Rea Park in Montebello was open to visitors again Saturday after closing for four days earlier this month after concerns over coyote attacks.

But one neighbor is on high alert after his dog “Pinkie” was found dead early Saturday.

Orlando Contreras believes the dog, who was a member of his family for 10 years, was mauled and killed overnight by a coyote. He said he has reported the death to Montebello Police and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Other neighbors told KTLA at least four other pets have been killed in the last two weeks in the same neighborhood.

Contreras is hoping city officials will do more to protect the park, which is steps away from schools and is popular among runners and walkers.

“We need to be proactive as a community, we need to be proactive as a city. We can’t wait for an incident to occur where a person gets attacked,” he said “That is the last thing we need.”
