A 24-year-old woman who was named a “person of interest” in the death of her grandmother has been arrested in her killing, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced Sunday.

Sarah Montoya was arrested and booked at the department’s Norwalk Station early Wednesday, inmate records showed. She was being held on $2 million bail.

Details about Montoya’s arrest were expected to be released at a news conference Monday morning, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The granddaughter was taken into custody one day after authorities named her a “person of interest” in the investigation into the death of 64-year-old Paula Montoya. The woman’s body was found wrapped in a blanket when she was discovered deceased in her Bell home on July 21.

Paula Montoya was last been seen alive two days earlier, and authorities had gone to her home in the 6600 block of Pine Avenue to perform a welfare check.

Sarah Montoya and her four young children, ages 1 to 9, were believed to have been the last ones to see the grandmother alive. Investigators thought she may have gone to Mexico with her kids the same day Paula Montoya was found dead, sheriff’s officials said at a news conference Tuesday.

Montoya’s death was initially classified as “suspicious” before it was apparently ruled a homicide. Authorities still have not revealed how she died.

Paula Montoya was described in the news release as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother who was an active member at her local church.

The news conference, which will detail the circumstances of the arrest, is scheduled to take place Monday at 10 a.m., sheriff’s officials said.
